Anglican priest dies in kidnappers’ den, wife, daughter still captive

The Kaduna Anglican Diocese has confirmed the death of Venerable Edwin Achi, Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero, while in the custody of his abductors. His wife and daughter remain in captivity.

The priest and his wife, Sarah Achi, were abducted from their residence in the Nissi community of Chikun Local Government Area on 28 October 2025. The Diocese announced the development in a statement signed by Most Revd Timothy Yahaya, Bishop of Kaduna.

“With a heavy heart and deep sorrow, the Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, announces the passing unto glory of Venerable Edwin Achi. Venerable Edwin, who was kidnapped alongside his wife on 28th October, has been confirmed dead,” the statement read.

The Diocese described Achi’s passing as a loss to the clergy and the Church community and stated that it continues to pray for the safe release of his remaining family. It also announced the cancellation of a planned programme in his honour.

Earlier reports indicated that the kidnappers had provided photographs of Achi and his wife in captivity as proof of life while demanding a ransom of N600 million. The images reportedly showed them in distressed and malnourished conditions, along with other captives.
