A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has granted bail to Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in a road crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which was carrying former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Anthony Joshua and his two friends.
The court granted the 46-year-old driver ₦5 million bail, with two sureties, and adjourned the case to February 25, 2026, for further hearing.
The driver is standing trial for the accident that led to the deaths of Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, members of Joshua’s boxing camp, over a four-count charge.
The charges are dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, and driving without a valid national driver’s license.
The offences were said to be contrary to the provisions of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004(as applicable in Ogun State)
Persecution counsel, Nijiwe Richard, prayed the court to postpone the case to allow the prosecution to transfer the case file to the office of the State Attorney General through the Department of Public Prosecution for legal advice to ensure justice prevails.
But the defence council, Abiodun Olalekan, immediately rejected the application, saying it is prepared to proceed with the trial.
However, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the case to February 25.
Joshua sustained injuries in the accident that occurred last year, but his two friends, died on the spot when the vehicle rammed into a stationary truck by the roadside.
After recuperating at the hospital, Joshua joined others at the London Central Mosque to pay their last respects to his friends, who served as his conditioning coach and personal trainer.
