FG says reforms will ensure access to quality education

Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that the Federal Government is implementing comprehensive reforms to expand access to education, improve the quality, and ensure that learning outcomes are aligned with the demands of a modern, digital, knowledge-driven global economy.

Noting that no nation could rise beyond the quality of its human capital and no sustainable development could be achieved without a skilled, educated and empowered citizenry, he added that his administration was also putting emphasis on the welfare of both academic and non-academic staff and students.

He stated this yesterday, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) 56th convocation ceremony for the awards of EMBA, EMNIF, University of Lagos Business School (ULBS), PGD, Master’s, and PhD degrees of its School of Postgraduate Studies.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, said the Federal Government had embarked on several legacy projects, including NELFUND, to reform the education sector.

He said the reforms and programmes represented restored hope, expanded opportunities and deliberate investment in Nigeria’s future human capital, particularly in disciplines that would drive productivity, innovation and competitiveness in decades to come.

Tinubu said over N100 billion was earmarked for rehabilitating 12 federal universities, faculties of engineering and technology across the country.

The president commended the university for sustaining a legacy of excellence that had continued to distinguish the institution within Nigeria and beyond, saying since its establishment in 1962, it had remained one of Nigeria’s most strategic national assets, producing generations of leaders, innovators, professionals and public servants whose contributions had shaped the national journey.

He said the students were graduating at a moment of national allure when Nigeria was undertaking bold reforms to reposition its economy, strengthen its institutions and secure a more inclusive and prosperous future.

At the event, the university awarded honorary doctorate degrees to Group Chief Executive, Oando PLC, Jubril Adewale Tinubu, and former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr Kanu Godwin Agabi. It also conferred Distinguished Professor on former Chief Medical Director, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof. Olayide Osibogun, and awarded Emeritus Professors to Professor of Botany, James Dele Olowokudejo, and former President, Nigerian Academy of Letters, Prof. Duro Oni.

Oyeyemi Idowu Adebamowo emerged as the Best Doctoral Thesis in ULBS, and Bamidele Joshua Olapoju emerged as the best graduating student in ULBS, while Haruna Egbunu Abubakar has the Overall Best PhD Thesis.
