Rivers United know that their campaign in this year’s CAF Champions League could be defined by the result of their next game in the championship against Power Dynamos of Zambia on Sunday in Uyo.
The Finidi George-tutored team drew with the Zambians in Ndola last week and needs at least a win to harbour any hope of moving forward in the championship.
The team is still haunted by their inability to defeat Morocco’s RS Berkane in their last home game in Uyo, making it important that they win the next game or fall out of the chase.
At the first leg of this weekend’s tie in Ndola, Rivers United were held to a goalless draw in the Matchday 3 game at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, a result that extended their wait for a first win in the group, a valuable away point in a tightly balanced section that includes Moroccan heavyweights RS Berkane.
The Rivers United contingent, who returned to Port Harcourt on Monday, are expected to relocate to Uyo to begin preparation for the game today.
Speaking after the game in Ndola, Finidi said the result was not what his team wanted, adding, however, that they are happy with the draw.
“We’re not totally satisfied. This draw would have been a good result for us if we had won against Berkane. We knew how we lost that game.
“In the last one minute, in the extra time, we conceded two goals. If we had won that game, this draw would have been the perfect result for us because we know we’re going back home to face the same team.”
Finidi believes Sunday’s game could redefine Rivers United’s campaign, adding, “We’re not quite happy with how everything has turned out, but it’s football. We just have to continue and see how we can get our first win at home next week.
“Going forward, I think the game at home is going to be different. We’re going to approach it differently. Hopefully, we will be capable of winning that game and having our first win.”
Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced Cap-Vert referee, Leónidas Lenine Barbosa Da Graca, as centre referee of the match scheduled for the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. It will kick off at 5.00 p.m.
Da Graca will be assisted by his compatriot, Delgado Fernandes Wilson Jorge (first assistant referee) and Guinea-Bissau’s Ricardo Oliveira Sanca (second assistant referee), with Aldair Alsau Lopes Grabe also from Guinea-Bissau, as fourth official.
