2026 Intermediate Games: Lagos Sports Commission Partners YABATECH

YABATECH

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) have entered into a strategic alliance as Lagos intensifies preparations to host the 2026 National Intermediate Games for Under-18 athletes.

The partnership was formalised during a consultative meeting at YABATECH’s council chambers, where senior officials from both institutions aligned on frameworks for collaboration, facility utilisation, and operational planning.

The move is seen as a critical step in ensuring the successful delivery of the national youth competition.

Speaking at the engagement, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, emphasised the importance of institutional synergy in sports development.

“Our collaboration with Yaba College of Technology reflects our strategic approach to hosting major sporting events through strong institutional partnerships,” Fatodu said.

“The National Intermediate Games are a crucial platform for identifying and nurturing young talent, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed his commitment to backing the Lagos State Sports Commission to deliver a tournament that upholds the highest standards of organisation, athlete welfare, and long-term developmental impact.”

The meeting also underscored Lagos State’s growing reputation as a dependable host for major sporting events.

In recent years, the state has successfully staged several high-profile competitions that drew national and international participation, reinforcing its position as a hub for sports tourism and youth sports development in Nigeria and across Africa.

The Guardian recall that Lagos topped the last edition of the National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State in 2025.

This year, 2026, is a busy one for the nation’s sports, as Lagos hosts the National Intermediate Games, Delta stage the National Youth Games, while Enugu play host to the National Sports Festival.

There are indications that one of the Games might be moved to 2027 since Team Nigeria is also participating in this year’s Commonwealth Games holding in Glasgow, Scotland.
