The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) will tomorrow embark on a peaceful rally in Abuja in solidarity with members of the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC) over unpaid salaries and wage arrears of Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) workers.
In a joint statement by the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah and the TUC Secretary General, Nuhu Toro, the two labour unions said the rally would publicly affirm that an injury to one is an injury to all, and that the Nigerian labour movement would not abandon its own.
They restated their total commitment to the workers’ struggle, urged the JUAC members to remain steadfast, resolute and courageous in the defence of their rights and dignity.
The statement said: “This is a struggle rooted in justice, fairness and respect for labour rights and must be pursued with unity of purpose and unshakeable spirit.”
Reaffirming their support, they assured the workers that “there must be no retreat and no surrender in the face of intimidation, repression or attempts to wear out workers through hardship and fear”.
They urged all affiliates and state councils to mobilise massively and participate fully in the lawful and peaceful action.
The labour leaders added that it would sustain the struggle until justice was done to the workers.
Recall that both unions have accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of intimidating workers and declared full support for striking workers in the territory.
The labour centres said FCT workers had been unfairly treated by the FCT Administration, alleging that recent actions by the minister and a ruling of the National Industrial Court in Abuja were aimed at weakening the ongoing industrial action over unpaid salaries and wage arrears.
According to them, the treatment of FCT workers, coupled with alleged intimidation, harassment, and insults, was unacceptable and could not be ignored by organised labour.
