A fire outbreak in Tumfure Quarters, Gombe, has destroyed a two-bedroom flat and a three-bedroom detached residential building.
The incident was confirmed in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, ASF Bashir Muazu.
Muazu said firefighters swiftly brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.
“No casualties were recorded. Our firefighters responded promptly to the distress call and were able to confine the fire to the affected buildings. Their timely intervention prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby structures,” he said.
He added that preliminary assessments showed property valued at about N25 million was saved, while losses were estimated at N5 million.
Meanwhile, the Gombe State Fire Service has urged residents, especially traders, to exercise caution and step up efforts to prevent fire outbreaks.
The Director-General, Mr Idris Kwami, made the appeal in an interview with journalists in Gombe yesterday, citing the recurring incidents in markets and residential areas.
Kwami said fire outbreaks should concern all residents because of their devastating impact on lives and property, stressing that prevention remains the most effective response.
He disclosed that six people died in fire disasters across the state in 2025, while 756 others were saved. According to him, the service rescued property worth N2.7 billion during the period, while property valued at N433.6 million was lost.
He said the service recorded 253 incident calls in 2025, with February and March accounting for 46 and 42 calls respectively — representing 34.8 per cent of the total for the year.
The director said continuous sensitisation and engagement with residents were aimed at prioritising prevention over response, noting that “in fire disasters, prevention is always best.”
