Six killed, three injured in Lagos–Abeokuta expressway crash

Accident Caution sign

No fewer than six persons lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries, in a multiple-vehicle crash that occurred on Tuesday along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, around the Ota axis of Ogun State.

The accident involved a Mack tanker truck with registration number EKY 913 YH, a yellow Suzuki mini-bus with registration number SMK 16 YK, and a yellow TVS tricycle with registration number AAA 840 QM.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said nine passengers—seven males and two females—were involved in the crash.

According to him, three persons (two males and one female) sustained injuries, while six others (five males and one female) died.

Akinbiyi explained that the crash was caused by reckless driving on the part of the tanker driver, who reportedly rammed into the other vehicles while travelling from Lagos towards Ota.

He said operatives of TRACE, alongside officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were immediately mobilised for rescue operations.

“The injured victims were taken to the State Hospital, Ota, while the deceased were deposited at the State Mortuary, Ifo,” Akinbiyi said.

He added that all affected vehicles had been evacuated from the road and moved to the Papa Oscar cage, noting that traffic, which was initially disrupted, was effectively managed by operatives to ensure free flow.
