The Kano State Ministry of Livestock Development has commenced a statewide Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) vaccination on livestocks to curb spead of virus in animals.
The preventive campaign measures is targeting approximately 1.5 million heads of cattle across the state.
Unveiling the veterinary vaccination campaign in Bunkure Local Government Area, Commissioner for livestocks development in Kano, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, said the exercise is critical to ensure healthy consumption of protein.
Dr. Aliyu, represented at by a veterinary public health and epidemiology expert, Dr. Abubakar Muhammad affirmed the vaccination exercise will cover all 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State as part of a comprehensive strategy to control and eliminate contagious diseases in livestocks.
Dr. Abubakar who emphasized the primary objective of improving animal health, strengthening livestock and production, reaffirmed government commitment to safeguarding public health across the state.
He reminded that CBPP is a highly contagious and debilitating disease that severely affects cattle productivity, leading to weight loss, reduced milk production, poor meat quality, and, in severe cases, death.
“These effects pose serious economic threats to livestock farmers and may indirectly affect food security and public health” he said.
The Commissioner urged livestock farmers, herders, and all stakeholders to key into the campaign and support the veterinary officials by presenting their animals for vaccination.
He stressed that collective action is critical to successfully curbing the spread of the disease, noted that preventing CBPP through vaccination will help ensure the availability of healthy and quality livestock products, especially.
