The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested two men over alleged electricity meter tampering and illegal power vending.
The suspects, Babatunde, 46, and Akin, 40, were apprehended following an investigation into suspected fraudulent activities linked to a prepaid meter belonging to a customer of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
In a statement, the command said the arrests followed a formal complaint by the affected consumer, who reported that his prepaid meter developed a fault that prevented him from loading recharge units.
The State Commandant, Mr Igbalawole Sotiyo, said preliminary findings indicated deliberate interference with the device.
According to the NSCDC, the two suspects allegedly collaborated to manipulate the prepaid meter, with one of them, a former employee of the distribution company, linked to the technical aspect of the tampering.
“The investigation revealed that the prepaid meter was unlawfully formatted, and about 200 electricity units were made to appear on the meter without payment,” the statement said.
Sotiyo added that the corps remained committed to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, including electricity installations, and warned that offenders would be prosecuted
The command said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
