The Nigerian Southern Senators Forum has described the death of its General Secretary, Mpigi Barinada, as a painful and irreplaceable loss.
Also, the senator representing Katsina Central, Abdulaziz Musa Yar’Adua, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mpigi, describing the late lawmaker as a symbol of unity, nationalism, and selfless service.
Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the current Senate, was widely regarded by colleagues as a steady hand, a loyal ally, and a committed voice for his people.
In a statement on Friday signed by the Forum’s Chairman, Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, members expressed deep sorrow over the development, noting that his death has left a void within both the caucus and the broader legislative family.
“The Forum mourns the passing of a dedicated patriot and dependable leader,” the statement read. “His death is a profound loss to the Senate, Rivers State, and Nigeria as a whole.”
The statement added that as General Secretary of the Forum, Mpigi was instrumental in coordinating the body’s activities and strengthening collaboration among senators from the southern region.
The Forum noted that beyond politics, Mpigi was admired for his calm disposition and integrity, adding that amid the complexities of national politics, he maintained close ties with his constituency, ensuring that their concerns were represented at the highest levels of governance.
The Forum extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the people of Rivers South-East Senatorial District, and the Government and people of Rivers State.
It also prayed for the repose of his soul and comfort for all who mourn.
Yar’Adua, in a press statement on Friday, paid glowing tribute to Mpigi, noting that his passing marks a painful loss to the National Assembly and the country at large.
He said the deceased embodied the spirit of bridge-building in Nigeria’s often complex political landscape, working tirelessly to promote dialogue, cooperation, and national cohesion.
“Senator Mpigi was a true nationalist who understood that our diversity is our strength, not our weakness. He devoted himself to building bridges between communities and fostering progress in our great nation,” he said.
According to the Katsina lawmaker, Mpigi’s commitment to the people of Rivers State and Nigeria remained steadfast throughout his legislative career.
He stated that from his time in the House of Representatives to his service in the Senate, he consistently championed initiatives aimed at uplifting his constituents and contributing meaningfully to national development.
Yar’Adua described Mpigi as a progressive-minded legislator who approached public service with integrity, humility, and a deep sense of responsibility, adding that the 10th Senate would greatly miss his experience, wisdom, and passion for inclusive governance.
On behalf of the people of Katsina Central and his family, Yar’Adua extended heartfelt condolences to Mpigi’s immediate family, the Government and people of Rivers State, and Nigerians.
He prayed that God grants his family, friends, and constituents the fortitude to bear the loss and that the soul of the departed lawmaker finds eternal rest.
