Reacting, State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ola Oresanya, linked Wednesday’s offensive gaseous odour to previous underground gas emissions that have occurred intermittently in Ijebu-Ode since April 2026.

Oresanya said investigations by the state government had established that the incidents were neither acts of sabotage nor the result of gas pipeline leaks, but natural occurrences associated with geological and tectonic fault lines.

The commissioner urged residents to remain calm, assuring parents and guardians that the incident was not fatal and that the affected students were expected to recover shortly after receiving medical treatment.
