FCT polls : Calm in Abuja as FCT Police ensures peaceful elections

As the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) elect Chairmen and Councillors across the six Area Councils the Police Command has ensured massive deployment resulting into peaceful exercise .

Across the six Area Councils of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji, Bwari and Kuje there were massive deployment and presence of police personnel and other sister agencies including Security and Civil Defence Corps, Military personnel and personnel of the Department of State Services.

The FCT Commissioner of Police CP Miller G Dantawaye had redeployed Divisional Police Officers on the directive of the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun eliminate compromises and ensure the integrity of the exercise .

The redeployment was part of a measure to also ensure that comprehensive severity arrangement was aimed at strengthening operational effectiveness and upholding the highest standards of professionalism before , during and after the FCT Area Council elections .

The council polls monitored by our correspondent across the Area Councils witnessed a high level of professionalism displayed by the Police detachments who kept a reasonable distances from the polling boots but kept vigilance and looked prepared to tackle every emerging threat or act of violence aimed at disrupting the process .

A member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Nyanya polling station, Honourable Musa Maigida said: ” So far the process is ongoing and we have not had any harassment from the Police . As you can see they are here and professional so far . We need them here and we do not expect them to be partisan but so far they have not showed any partisanship and we are happy with their conduct”.

The FCT police command has equally deployed professionalism in enforcing the restriction of movement directives it issued to the FCT residents .

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT CP Miller G Dantawaye, through the Command’s spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh had announced a restriction of movement across the FCT from 6.AM to 6:PM Saturday .

Checks reveal that people on essential services only needed to identify themselves and were granted access as well as dully accredited election officials .

The Command promises to ensure a safe ,free and credible electoral process across the FCT and encourages residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies.
