More businesses go digital as .ng sees new 15,216 entries

The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) said.ng has witnessed fresh registration and renewal activities, highlighting key growth trends, retention patterns and shifts across the domain extensions.

The January 2026 Domain Report showed renewed traction around the .ng as more businesses come online.
.ng is Nigeria’s official country code top-level domain (ccTLD), managed by the NiRA to signify secured and locally relevant digital presence.

Introduced in 1995, it is used for local search engine optimisation (SEO), brand identity and to meet government mandates for local data hosting.

According to data released by the NiRA, the headline figures show a total of 15,216 transactions in January alone.

But the real story lies in the delta between the people showing up for the first time and people refusing to leave.

Nigeria recorded 8,111 new registrations last month. These are the fresh startups, the side hustles and the Day 1 ideas finally going live.

The ecosystem also saw 7,105 renewals.

Domain Name analysts believed that in the world of tech, a renewal is a much stronger signal than a registration. While a registration is often fueled by a flash-in-the-pan idea, a renewal is a vote of confidence.

According to NiRA, the business has found a product-market fit, the brand has equity and the founder is ready for another year.

President of NiRA, Adesola Akinsanya, explained that growth was largely driven by 3rd-level domains, which accounted for 6,155 registrations, representing nearly three-quarters of all new sign-ups during the period.

Akinsanya, who said these domains remained a key entry point for small and medium-sized businesses, startups, side ventures, and online entrepreneurs, noted that their accessibility continued to support broader participation in Nigeria’s digital economy.

He said activity within 2nd-level domains revealed a different but equally important trend.

“With 2,424 renewals compared to 1,956 new registrations, renewals exceeded new sign-ups. This indicates increasing retention and sustained trust among registrants who already hold premium .ng identities.

“This shift suggests growing maturity within the namespace, where businesses are not only registering domains but actively maintaining them.

“The bigger picture: in total, we recorded 15,216 domain transactions.

“Behind that figure are thousands of product launches, new companies, rebrands, campaigns, and dreams taking shape. Each click of register or renew strengthens Nigeria’s digital footprint,” he stated.
