Kano commissioner resigns, eyes APC chairmanship

A few weeks after dumping the opposition New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), the Commissioner for Water Resources in Kano State, Hon. Umar Haruna Doguwa, has resigned from the cabinet of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Doguwa, a close political associate of Governor Yusuf, tendered his resignation on Monday but did not give a clear reason for it.

However, The Guardian learned that the former Commissioner may have left Governor Yusuf’s cabinet to contest the state chairmanship of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Although no candidate has shown interest in taking over the position from the outgoing Chairman, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, The Guardian gathered that the position had already been zoned to Kano South, where Doguwa hails.

Doguwa, a one-time APC Chairman during the second term of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s administration, may likely emerge at tonight’s state congress.

Meanwhile, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has accepted Doguwa’s resignation, expressing deep satisfaction with his commitment, loyalty, and dedicated service.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin-Tofa, the governor recalled that Hon. Doguwa previously served as Commissioner for Education, where he played a vital role in advancing educational policies and reforms, including the declaration of a state of emergency in education, before his redeployment to the Ministry of Water Resources.

According to the release, under Doguwa’s stewardship at the Water Resources Ministry, significant milestones were achieved in the rehabilitation of water facilities and the expansion of potable water supply to several communities across the state.

Governor Yusuf further stated that Hon. Doguwa’s leadership strengthened institutional capacity within the ministry and improved service delivery in line with the administration’s vision of providing sustainable water access for all citizens.

He described Doguwa as a disciplined and hardworking public servant whose contributions will remain part of the administration’s achievements.

He wished him continued success in his future endeavours and assured him that the state government would continue to build on the progress recorded in the Water Resources sector.

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to ensuring an uninterrupted water supply and improving the welfare of the people of Kano State.

Subsequently, the governor has directed the Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Education, Gwani, Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda, to supervise the Ministry of Water Resources pending the appointment or redeployment of a substantive commissioner.
