Abia APC elects Chijioke Chukwu as Chairman, targets 500,000 new members

Hon. Chijioke Chukwu

The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has elected former Abia State House of Assembly Minority Leader, Chijioke Chukwu, as its new state chairman.

Chukwu, who represented Bende North constituency in the House of Assembly, emerged by consensus at the party’s state congress held on Tuesday. A former state secretary of the party, Tohukwu Avajah, was also returned.
The congress was overseen by the State Congress Committee Chairman, Emmanuel Goar, while the Chairman of the Ward and Local Government Congress Committee was Marc Wabara.

Addressing party members after the congress, Goar commended them for ensuring that the congresses at the ward, local government and state levels were rancour-free and seamlessly conducted.

“We started on a good footing and ended on the same footing, with all resolutions duly signed by stakeholders across wards and local governments before ratification at the state level,” he said.

Goar noted that the four statutory committees—Screening, Screening Appeal, Main Congress and Congress Appeal—worked harmoniously to deliver credible and widely accepted outcomes.

Similarly, Wabara described the consensus approach adopted during the congress as effective and inclusive. Other party stakeholders, including Emeka Wogu, Nkechi Nwaogu, and Henry Ikoh, also affirmed that the Abia APC has emerged united and repositioned for future electoral victories.

The South-East APC leader and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, expressed delight over the successful congress, noting that no individual could henceforth claim ownership of the party in the state.
He charged the newly elected executives, led by Chukwu, to run an inclusive party structure capable of securing victory for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Speaking with journalists, Chukwu disclosed that his administration would immediately commence a massive membership drive aimed at increasing the party’s membership strength from about 160,000 to over 500,000 within the next two months.

He added that the state executive would also embark on solidarity visits to prominent party members who were absent from the congress, with a view to understanding their grievances and reconciling aggrieved stakeholders where necessary.
