How Ben Kalu leads APC to become largest party in Abia

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu

The recently concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) electronic re-registration exercise has repositioned the party as the fastest-growing and most formidable political force in Abia State, marking a dramatic turnaround from its once-marginal status.

Across the state’s 17 local government areas and 184 wards, the surge in new memberships points to a growing acceptance of the APC at the grassroots. Party insiders and observers attribute much of this momentum to the strategic leadership and sustained grassroots engagement of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

Not long ago, the APC struggled for relevance in Abia, facing widespread scepticism and rejection. However, through deliberate organisation, inclusive leadership, and consistent engagement with party stakeholders and ordinary citizens, Kalu has overseen a steady transformation of the party’s fortunes.

Operating quietly but methodically, he strengthened party structures from polling units to wards and local governments, fostered internal cohesion, and mobilised grassroots supporters across the state. His leadership style, marked by accessibility and responsiveness to public concerns, has helped reshape perceptions of the party.

Under his stewardship, the APC has evolved into a more people-centred and issue-driven platform, aligning its messaging with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and taking that message directly to communities.

This approach has broadened the party’s appeal and deepened its presence across Abia.
Today, the APC is no longer viewed merely as an opposition party but is increasingly regarded as the party to beat in Abia State, buoyed by expanding membership, stronger grassroots networks, and renewed public confidence.

Observers say Kalu’s resilience, organisational acumen, and long-term vision have laid a solid foundation for the party’s continued growth. With momentum building and structures firmly in place, there is growing belief among party faithful that the dividends of this political realignment will become evident in the 2027 general elections.
