Nigerian singer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, presented a gift to former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his 89th birthday celebration.

The former Nigerian President, celebrating a major milestone, was surrounded by family, friends, and well-wishers at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.

Charly Boy was among the high-profile guests in attendance. Dressed in his signature eccentric style, Charly Boy approached the former President to present his birthday gift.

A video making the rounds online shows the controversial personality causing a stir with his unique arrival at the party. Dressed in his signature eccentric style, Charly Boy approached the former President to present his birthday gift

In a surprising turn of events, Obasanjo leaned in and planted a respectful kiss on Charly Boy’s cheek, a moment that has since gone viral on social media.

Born Charles Oputa, he is the son of the late famous judge, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa.

Even though he came from a strict home, he chose a very different path. He moved to the United States for his studies but returned to Nigeria to follow his passion for music.

In the 1980s, he became famous for his “punk” style, wearing leather jackets, riding heavy power bikes, and sporting a mohawk hairstyle.

His hit songs like Nwata Miss made him a household name. He used his music to talk about the problems in the country, which made him very popular with the youth.

Beyond music, Charly Boy became a major face of activism in Nigeria. He is known for leading the “Our Mumu Don Do” movement and has consistently fought for the rights of the common man, including pensioners and motorcycle riders. His life has been one of challenging the very status quo that men like Obasanjo represented.

On the other hand, Olusegun Obasanjo has remained a constant and influential figure in Nigeria’s post-colonial history.

He rose to fame as a young military officer and later became the Head of State. He made history by being the first Nigerian military leader to hand over power to a civilian government.

Years later, he returned as a civilian President in 1999. Since leaving office, he has stayed active in African politics and global diplomacy.

At 89, he is still one of the most respected voices in Nigeria, known for his grit and his work in farming. The meeting between the two men shows that despite their different styles, they share a deep respect for each other.

While Charly Boy represents rebellion and the arts, Obasanjo represents the old political guard.

The viral kiss on the cheek has sparked many reactions, with many Nigerians describing it as a rare and beautiful sign of respect between two national icons.
