Corporation’s officials visit UI don, apologise over staff assault
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has urged stronger collaboration between state governments and the Railway Police Command to safeguard rail infrastructure nationwide.

Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, who made the call during an interview on Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, said that the railway police currently operate in 26 states and should be integrated into the security architecture of state governments to better safeguard rail assets.

He noted that protecting railway infrastructure is closely tied to the security of the country’s mobility corridors, describing the rail system as a strategic national asset that runs through several states and supports economic activities.

Meanwhile, the management of the NRC has visited a lecturer at the University of Ibadan (UI), Dr Mikail Abdulsalam, to tender a formal apology following an assault on him by one of its members of staff.

Abdulsalam, a lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, was reportedly beaten and molested at the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station, Moniya, Ibadan, last week.

The two staff members of the Corporation had since been arrested by the police in connection with the incident.

Officials of the Corporation, during the visit, presented a formal letter of apology to the lecturer.

The delegation was received by the leadership of the UI Muslim Community, led by Prof. Mufutau Abdulrahmon and Prof. Wole Abass.

In the letter dated March 5, 2026, and signed by the Railway District Manager, Ibadan, Naomi Itajobi, the Corporation expressed its “deepest apology and sincere regret” to Abdulsalam over the incident.

The NRC described the conduct of the staff members involved as unacceptable and inconsistent with the standards and values expected of its personnel when dealing with passengers and visitors.

The Corporation also assured the lecturer that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken against those responsible, while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring that such an incident does not recur.
