The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has expressed concern over what it described as the growing disarray within Nigeria’s opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that the country may be heading toward one of the most predictable electoral cycles in its democratic history.
In a statement on Monday, the party said the opposition has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of coherence, courage and constructive engagement with the pressing needs of Nigerians.
The statement, signed by Lagos APC spokesperson Mogaji Seye Oladejo, noted that parties expected to provide credible alternatives to the ruling party have instead been consumed by internal divisions, populist rhetoric and political opportunism.
According to the APC, rather than building strong institutions, developing policy-driven platforms or offering meaningful solutions to Nigeria’s economic and social challenges, opposition parties have largely confined themselves to media theatrics and persistent complaints.
The party further observed that internal struggles within opposition ranks appear to be driven largely by personal ambitions among key leaders, a situation it said has resulted in a fragmented political bloc unable to present a coherent national alternative.
“It is evident that instead of building consensus and strengthening party structures, leading figures within the opposition are locked in a relentless contest of individual aspirations,” the statement said.
The Lagos APC also argued that there is little evidence of serious preparation for the 2027 elections by opposition parties, noting that Nigerians have seen limited signs of organization, mobilization or policy articulation that would normally precede a competitive electoral contest.
While emphasising the importance of a vibrant opposition in a democratic system, the party said the current state of disunity among opposition groups is unhealthy for Nigeria’s democratic growth.
The APC maintained that democracy functions best when there is a responsible and organized opposition capable of presenting viable alternatives to the electorate.
The Lagos chapter of the party, however, stated that the APC remains focused on governance and national development, noting that the party at both federal and state levels continues to pursue economic reforms, infrastructural development and social intervention programmes.
It added that as the 2027 elections draw closer, Nigerians will ultimately evaluate political parties based on leadership, performance and vision.
The party therefore called on political actors across the country to elevate the standard of democratic engagement by promoting robust debates, thoughtful policy proposals and disciplined political organizations.
Oladejo reiterated that the APC remains confident that Nigerians will once again make informed choices when the time comes, while the party continues to focus on governance, service delivery and national progress.
“It is therefore unsurprising that as 2027 draws closer, Nigerians are increasingly looking toward continuity, stability, and proven leadership. Elections should be competitive and inspiring, but when those who claim to be alternatives fail to present credible visions or organized structures, the outcome naturally becomes more predictable.”
