The founder and Chief Executive Officer of the FirstFounders Venture Studio, David Lanre Messan, has emphasised the importance of building a generation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven business communities in Africa.
Lanre-Messan, in a packaged business outline, highlighted the challenges and ways of navigating out of it.
He stated: At FirstFounders (F2), our mission is to systematically build and back the next generation of high-growth, AI-driven ventures across Africa, while democratizing entrepreneurship on the continent. We are not merely investors; we are co-builders and partners, committed to transforming ideas into scalable, investment-ready companies. Bridging the gap between ambition and reality in Africa’s startup ecosystem is not just playing the game. It requires the right founders, the right support, and a structured approach to venture building.
One of our core strengths lies in how we de-risk the venture-building process. This begins with selecting founders who possess the resilience, clarity, and mindset required to navigate the uncertainties of startup building. We have realized that our success depends not just on the ideas founders bring, but also on how we evaluate their mindset and capabilities.
Traditional evaluations often overemphasize product-market fit or funding potential, without sufficient attention to the qualities of the founders themselves. To address this, we adopted the PPS Founder Acceleration Framework, originally developed by startup expert Zainab Aderinwale during her work with us in 2022. Zainab continues to serve as a board member, providing ongoing mentorship and strategic guidance.
“The PPS Founder Acceleration Framework has been instrumental in improving how we select and mentor our startup founders,” says David Lanre Messan, Founder & CEO of FirstFounders.
Using this framework, we assess founders along three critical dimensions:
Passion – the internal drive and commitment to solving a problem. Entrepreneurship is inherently challenging, and we seek founders with high determination, resilience, and tolerance for risk and uncertainty.
Problem insight – the depth of understanding of the challenge they are addressing. Founders must be willing to thoroughly research their industry, customers, market dynamics, and human behavior to ensure their solutions are relevant and effective.
Solution clarity – the feasibility and scalability of their proposed business approach. We prioritize founders who are prepared to execute effectively, plan for growth, and build ventures that can scale sustainably.
Unlike conventional evaluation methods, the PPS Founder Acceleration Framework combines psychological insight, market understanding, and execution readiness to predict long-term startup success, making it a unique and impactful methodology in the African startup ecosystem.
Since implementing the framework, we have been able to identify founders who are disciplined, adaptive, and capable of building impactful and sustainable ventures. The venture studio has now worked with over 200 entrepreneurs across Lagos and New York, and early-stage startups evaluated under the framework have collectively raised $10 million in funding, including more than $5 million for tech ventures, while receiving ongoing founder support and advisory.
FirstFounders provides end-to-end support, from ideation and product design to operational acceleration, go-to-market strategy, and financial guidance. By combining thoughtful founder evaluation with hands-on venture building, we are able to de-risk the startup journey and improve outcomes for our portfolio companies.
Our approach aligns with principles emphasized by top African entrepreneurs, including Aliko Dangote and Tony Elumelu, who highlight the importance of resilience, deep industry understanding, and execution discipline in building successful ventures. By embedding these principles into our framework, we ensure that founders are not only innovative but also prepared to navigate the complexities of scaling startups.
What sets us apart is our founder-first mentality, the belief that the right mindset, assessed through structured frameworks and supported by mentorship, drives startup success. The PPS Founder Acceleration Framework exemplifies this approach, and we are proud to continue applying it to guide and support founders across Africa.
