APC chieftain denies anti-Tinubu claims in S’East, hails Uzodimma’s neutrality

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, Obioma Success Akagburuonye, has called on Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027, insisting that claims of widespread opposition to the President in the South-East are exaggerated and misleading.

Akagburuonye, who is aspiring to contest the Imo State governorship election in 2027, also commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for maintaining what he described as a neutral and dignified stance in the emerging contest to succeed him.

Speaking during an interview, the APC stalwart rejected the narrative that the South-East region is collectively opposed to Tinubu and the ruling party, arguing that political realities on the ground contradict such assumptions.

According to him, the political control currently exercised by the APC in parts of the region demonstrates that support for the party and the President exists beyond what critics portray.

He said: “The opinion of a few individuals should not be mistaken for the position of an entire region. If the APC presently governs three out of the five South-East states, it clearly shows that the claim that the Igbo people are entirely against Tinubu and the APC is not correct.”

Akagburuonye also dismissed allegations suggesting that his political ambition is tied to Uzodimma’s influence, stressing that his aspiration is independent.

“If anyone describes me as the governor’s stooge, I wish the person well,” he said.

He noted that Uzodimma’s refusal to publicly endorse any successor has created a level playing field for aspirants, allowing political competition to thrive without undue interference.

According to him, the governor’s approach reflects confidence in merit, popular choice and divine direction rather than political imposition.

“Uzodimma believes power ultimately comes from God and the people. By leaving the process open, he has allowed individuals with vision and capacity to present themselves to the electorate,” he stated.

The governorship hopeful cautioned aspirants against relying solely on political patronage, endorsements or financial influence, warning that leadership in Imo State requires competence and credibility beyond connections.
