A strong political momentum is building in Abia State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as leaders and stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas have intensified calls on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, to contest the governorship of the state.
The appeal reflects a broader and growing movement within the Isiala Ngwa bloc—one of the most influential political strongholds in Abia—where community leaders, party faithful, and grassroots stakeholders have openly endorsed Kalu as their preferred candidate for the state’s top job.
The call was made during the official inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Chief Uzoma Ihuka to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the well-attended event, Kalu expressed confidence in the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing it as a stabilizing and unifying force that has strengthened the APC across the country.
According to him, while other political parties continue to grapple with internal divisions and leadership crises, the APC has remained cohesive, focused, and committed to delivering meaningful development to Nigerians.
He added that the progress currently being recorded under the APC-led Federal Government is only a glimpse of greater achievements to come, particularly for Abia State.
The event also witnessed a wave of defections from opposition parties, especially the Labour Party Nigeria, with many defectors citing renewed hope, purposeful leadership, and visible progress within the APC as reasons for joining the ruling party.
The new entrants were formally received into the APC, further strengthening the party’s grassroots presence and political structure in Isiala Ngwa.
Kalu assured them of inclusive governance and a people-centered leadership approach, emphasizing that the APC remains committed to engaging directly with communities to identify their needs and implement practical solutions that will improve livelihoods.
Responding to the growing calls for him to join the Abia governorship race, Kalu acknowledged the overwhelming support from various parts of the state, including Bende and Obingwa, and expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him.
He, however, noted that he would make his official position known in due course, stressing that such an important declaration must be made at the appropriate constitutional venue—the Abia State capital, Umuahia.
“I have heard your calls and I am deeply honoured by the trust you have shown. But I will respond at the right time and in the right place,” Kalu said.
“When we talk about governorship and the mandate to lead the people of Abia State, there is only one place recognized by the Constitution for such a declaration, and that is Umuahia. I will invite all stakeholders across the state, and it is there that I will give my response.”
He assured supporters that a formal invitation would soon be extended for a grand convergence in Umuahia, where he would collectively address the widespread calls regarding his potential governorship ambition.
The event ended on a high note, marked by renewed optimism, increased party unity, and a clear indication of the APC’s growing influence in Abia State ahead of the 2027 elections.
