The Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has affirmed Comrade Mathias Ote as the substantive National Chairman of the PTD branch.
The decision was reached at the branch’s Quarterly National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Warri, Delta State, at the weekend.
Ote succeeds the immediate past chairman, the late Comrade Augustine Egbon, whose death last year created a leadership vacuum in the union.
In his inaugural remarks, Ote paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, describing him as an exceptional leader who prioritised the welfare of members and the growth of the union.
“It is indeed very painful to lose such a great and exemplary leader who made lasting contributions to the union and positively impacted the lives of members,” he said.
The new chairman expressed gratitude to the leadership of NUPENG and members of the NEC for entrusting him with the responsibility, pledging to deliver purposeful and inclusive leadership.
“I appreciate the confidence reposed in me. There are many capable hands in this union, but you have collectively chosen me. I assure you that I will provide leadership that we will all be proud of,” Ote stated.
He emphasised that the welfare of members and the continued development of the union would remain his top priorities.
Ote also used the occasion to raise concerns over the safety of tanker drivers, particularly the dangers associated with night driving.
According to him, the increasing rate of criminal activities such as hijacking, kidnapping, and road accidents—compounded by poor road conditions—makes night travel extremely risky.
“In view of these realities, I strongly urge all members to desist from night driving. The risks are too high, and the consequences can be devastating,” he warned.
Similarly, National Trustee of NUPENG, Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti, reinforced the call for caution, urging drivers to prioritise their safety at all times.
“Life has no duplicate. Avoid unnecessary risks that could endanger your life. Accidents not only affect you but also have consequences for your employers and families,” he said.
The union reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the lives of its members while promoting best practices that ensure safety and sustainability in the petroleum transportation sector.
