The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has reiterated its commitment to fostering a productive and mutually beneficial relationship with the media, while cautioning against the publication of defamatory and unverified reports that could undermine public trust in government institutions.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stated this following the outcome of an investigative panel set up to review allegations published by an online platform, which accused some LASTMA officials of extorting ₦100,000 from commercial bus operators along the Coastal Road corridor.
Presenting the panel’s findings, Bakare-Oki clarified that the vehicles involved were apprehended for traffic violations, specifically wilful obstruction, in line with existing traffic laws.
He noted that all fines imposed were duly paid into government accounts, with evidence of payment provided by the affected drivers during the investigation. He stressed that these findings effectively dispel the allegations of extortion.
The General Manager highlighted the vital role of the media in promoting public awareness, encouraging compliance with traffic regulations, and supporting civic responsibility.
He described the press as a key partner in shaping public opinion and strengthening democratic governance.
However, he emphasised that this responsibility must be carried out with professionalism, accuracy, and adherence to ethical standards.
While acknowledging the importance of constructive criticism, Bakare-Oki warned that publishing unverified or sensational claims could damage institutional credibility and mislead the public.
He urged media organisations to prioritise fact-checking and due diligence before publishing reports, in order to prevent the spread of misinformation.
Reaffirming LASTMA’s commitment to transparency and engagement, Bakare-Oki assured that the Authority remains open and accessible through its official communication channels for verification and clarification.
He also noted the availability of a toll-free hotline (080000527862) and a dedicated Physical Complaints Unit (PCU) for members of the public to report incidents, seek clarification, and lodge complaints.
The Authority called on media stakeholders to uphold the principles of accuracy, balance, and responsibility in their reportage, in order to maintain public trust and preserve the integrity of the profession.
