Carloha Nigeria, authorised distributor and assembler of Chery vehicles, has strengthened its focus on employee development with the successful hosting of the Chery Emerging Leaders Football Tournament in Lagos.
The initiative underscores the company’s strategy of blending sportsmanship with capacity building, using football as a platform to foster teamwork, leadership and staff engagement across the organisation.
The tournament, aimed at identifying and grooming future leaders, featured a spirited contest between the workshop and showroom teams, with strong participation from employees across multiple departments.
Played on Saturday, April 4, the match ended 1–1 in regulation time before being decided via a penalty shootout. Team A edged Team B 5–4 on penalties to emerge champions and lift the trophy.
The event drew a broad audience, including the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Liang Long, members of management, staff and media representatives.
Speaking after the match, the General Manager, Marketing, Taiwo Akinpelu, said the tournament goes beyond recreation, describing it as a strategic investment in human capital.
“Our goal is to nurture future leaders by equipping employees with critical skills for professional excellence, collaboration and effective leadership,” he said.
Akinpelu noted that football was deliberately chosen for its unifying power.
“Football brings people together across departments and hierarchies, creating an environment where individuals can connect, compete and collaborate. That reflects the culture we are building,” he added.
He explained that the competition also created an informal setting for interaction among teams from the showroom, warehouse and workshop, helping to strengthen internal relationships and promote unity.
Highlighting the company’s inclusive culture, Akinpelu pointed out that the CEO participated in earlier matches, demonstrating leadership by example and reinforcing a team-driven ethos.
Beyond camaraderie, he said the tournament encouraged resilience, healthy competition and teamwork—key attributes for organisational growth.
He further disclosed that the event is designed as an annual fixture, typically scheduled around April, a period symbolising renewal and fresh opportunities.
“The season aligns with themes of reflection and rejuvenation, coinciding with Ramadan and Easter. It offers the perfect opportunity to re-energise our workforce for the months ahead,” he said.
Following the success of the maiden edition, Carloha Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to deepening staff engagement and leadership development through innovative, people-focused initiatives.
