Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured families of military and police personnel killed in a recent attack in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State that the Federal Government will not abandon them.
Speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, the Vice President reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to the welfare of fallen heroes and their families, pledging sustained support and recognition of their sacrifices.
Shettima gave the assurance on Tuesday in Birnin Kebbi during a condolence visit to Governor Nasir Idris over the killing of security personnel, as well as the death of the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman Zuru, who passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on April 7.
He stressed that the Federal Government would ensure that the sacrifices of officers of the armed forces and other security agencies were not in vain.
“We are here at the instance of Mr. President to commiserate with you and the good people of Kebbi State over the tragic developments of the past few days,” Shettima said.
“The loss of the Speaker, the destruction in Shanga Local Government Area, and the killing of our gallant officers are deeply painful. Our hearts are with you.”
The Vice President disclosed that President Tinubu had directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to affected communities and families of the deceased officers.
He added that the President mandated him to visit the state alongside the agency’s leadership to ensure immediate intervention and support for displaced persons.
“We will continue to stand by you. We will take all necessary measures to support you in carrying out your duties,” he said.
Shettima offered prayers for the deceased, asking Allah to grant them eternal rest and comfort their families, as well as give the state the strength to bear the losses.
The Vice President also commended Governor Idris for strides in infrastructure and education, noting that his leadership had fostered inclusiveness and development in the state.
In his remarks, Governor Idris said security agencies in Kebbi were working closely with the state government to address emerging threats, noting improvements in response and coordination.
He thanked the Federal Government for the high-level condolence visit and disclosed that the state had donated N60 million to support families of the 11 slain officers.
The governor further revealed that displaced communities had been resettled, with additional security measures put in place to prevent a recurrence of attacks.
Also speaking, the Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Sanusi Mikailu Sami, prayed for peace and stability in Kebbi State and across the country.
Members of the Vice President’s delegation included Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia; Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan; Special Adviser to the President on General Duties, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar; and Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, among others.
