President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Romuald Wadagni on his election as President of the Republic of Benin, following the April 12 presidential poll.
Wadagni, who currently serves as the country’s Minister of Finance, secured an overwhelming majority of votes in the election, marking a significant political transition in the Francophone West African nation.
The congratulatory message was contained in a statement signed by Tinubu and issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, through his official X handle.
In the statement, Tinubu said Wadagni’s victory reflected the confidence and trust reposed in him by the Beninese electorate, citing his track record as Finance Minister.
“This victory reflects the trust the Beninese people have placed in your vision and your distinguished record of service as Minister of Finance,” Tinubu said.
The Nigerian leader also highlighted the longstanding diplomatic and cultural ties between Nigeria and Benin, expressing optimism about deepening cooperation under Wadagni’s administration.
He noted that both countries share a history of friendship and collaboration, adding that he looked forward to working closely with the incoming president to strengthen bilateral relations, boost regional security, and promote economic prosperity within the sub-region.
Tinubu further commended the people of Benin for their peaceful conduct and commitment to democratic values throughout the election process.
“This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history. I commend the people of Benin for their resilience and commitment to the democratic process and for maintaining peace during the election cycle,” he stated.
He assured Wadagni of Nigeria’s continued support, wishing him wisdom, strength, and success as he prepares to assume office.
The Nigerian president added that his administration remains committed to enhancing cooperation within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union(AU), with a focus on shared prosperity and stability across the region
