ECOWAS donates equipment to support drug treatment in Adamawa

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), has donated equipment valued at about N200 million to support drug treatment and rehabilitation in Adamawa State.

The Head of ECOWAS Drug Prevention and Control Division, Daniel Amankwa, disclosed this during the handover ceremony in Yola.

Amankwa said the intervention aligns with ECOWAS efforts to support member states in rehabilitating people affected by drug use and facilitating their reintegration into society.

He noted that Adamawa is the fourth state in Nigeria to benefit from the initiative, which focuses on strengthening drug prevention and control systems.

“ECOWAS has provided equipment worth 200 million to support two centres in Adamawa — the state specialist centre and the NDLEA drug treatment centre,” he said, adding that the items are intended to enhance rehabilitation services.

He also emphasised the importance of early intervention and sustained support for individuals affected by drug use.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Pharmacist Zira Mathias Buba, said the equipment would improve treatment capacity in the state’s rehabilitation centres.

“The donated items will enhance rehabilitation and provide a conducive environment for patients,” he said.

The state commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Aliyu Abubakar, described the intervention as timely, noting that it would strengthen treatment and counselling services.

“The facilities will go a long way in restoring hope and comfort while receiving treatment,” he said.

He added that addressing drug abuse requires sustained collaboration among government, communities and relevant stakeholders.

Items donated include sewing machines, generators and air conditioners, among others.
