Don advocates early action to ensure dignified ageing for Nigerians

Pensioners appeal to FG to release accrued rights

A Sociologist and social gerontologist at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Prof. Olanrewaju Emmanuel Ajiboye, has called on the Federal Government to strengthen social security systems and ensure prompt pension payment as part of broader efforts to help citizens age with dignity.

He stressed that Nigeria would be at risk if the country fails to meet the needs of its growing elderly population.

Ajiboye, who spoke while delivering the 121st edition of LASU’s inaugural lecture series, themed: “That We May Age Gracefully: A Social Gerontologist’s X-ray of Later Life,’ noted that Nigeria’s declining life expectancy makes urgent reforms essential.

He warned that ageing in Nigeria is occurring against the background of socio-economic hardship, widespread poverty, and the rapid transformation of the traditional extended family structure, soaring inflation, particularly food inflation, and weak economic growth that have eroded the purchasing power of the elderly, further exacerbating their vulnerability.

According to him, evidence has shown that the rural areas are significantly more affected, with 75.5 per cent under the poverty level compared to 31 per cent in the urban areas.

Ajiboye charged the Federal Government to strengthen social security and pensions, and ensure financial security through robust, accessible pension schemes to alleviate poverty, subsidise healthcare and geriatric care.

He added that they should make medical services, including specialised geriatric care, affordable and reduce long wait times for older persons.

The expert, however, called for the implementation of national policies on ageing, urging the government to enact and enforce policies that guarantee the rights, dignity, and active participation of older persons.

He also urged the government to create ‘Support Elder Abuse Prevention’ as an initiative to provide protective services and helplines to prevent and address elder abuse.

Ajiboye, however, implored the senior citizens to cultivate emotional resilience, authenticity, and humour, while redefining self-worth around wisdom and experience rather than youthful appearance.

He also encouraged them to spend quality time with loved ones, volunteers, and pursue activities that bring joy and fulfilment.
