A pro-administration group, the Renewed Hope Grassroots Initiatives (RHGI), has rejected calls for a single four-year presidential term, describing the proposal as unfair and potentially destabilising to Nigeria’s political balance.
The group also reiterated its backing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, urging Nigerians to support what it called a continuity agenda.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Director-General of RHGI, Jaafaru Sa’ad, argued that a single-term structure would deny any administration sufficient time to implement meaningful reforms.
“In the spirit of equity, fairness and national unity, it becomes just and equitable for President Tinubu to be allowed the chance to complete his eight-year tenure,” Sa’ad said.
He warned that adopting a four-year single term could disrupt Nigeria’s informal power rotation arrangement and weaken governance stability.
“A single term of four years does not grant enough time to effect any substantive change and is capable of truncating the peaceful rotational presidency we have enjoyed,” he added.
Sa’ad also took aim at proponents of the one-term proposal, questioning their governance credentials.
“Nigerians should be wary of desperate politicians. If they could not fix a state they governed in eight years, it exposes their lack of understanding of the complexities of governance,” he said.
The group maintained that ongoing reforms under the Tinubu administration—spanning the economy, security, and education—require continuity to deliver results.
While acknowledging the hardship associated with current policies, RHGI urged citizens to remain patient, insisting that the long-term benefits would outweigh present challenges.
They thereby called for a nationwide mobilisation in support of the President’s re-election bid in 2027.
