The Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to strengthen combat efficiency and operational performance, with the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, directing commanders nationwide to embrace accountability, professionalism and mission-focused leadership in tackling the country’s security challenges.
Speaking at the close of the Chief of Army Staff Bi-Annual Conference 2026 in Abuja, the Army Chief said the gathering served as a strategic platform to review ongoing operations and develop fresh approaches to emerging security threats confronting the nation.
Held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites in Asokoro, the conference brought together senior military officers and security stakeholders to assess operational strategies, troop preparedness and evolving defence priorities.
Shaibu stressed that the Army remains committed to building a more agile and technologically advanced force capable of responding swiftly to modern warfare and asymmetric threats. He disclosed that the military has expanded its operational capabilities through the acquisition of additional tactical drones and the modification of aviation platforms for combat support missions.
According to him, the upgraded assets have improved intelligence gathering, target precision, troop mobility and casualty evacuation during operations.
The COAS also highlighted ongoing investments in personnel development, noting that recruitment, advanced military training and leadership programmes are being strengthened to improve professionalism and institutional performance across the Army.
Reaffirming his “soldier-first” policy, the Army Chief urged commanders to prioritise troop welfare, stressing that motivated personnel remain central to operational success. He called for improved attention to soldiers’ entitlements, healthcare, education and family welfare support systems.
He further challenged military leaders to ensure that resolutions reached during the conference translate into visible operational gains on the field, insisting that implementation remains the true measure of success.
Shaibu equally acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside top defence and security officials, for their continued collaboration in strengthening national security efforts.
The conference concluded with the presentation of commendation plaques to senior officers who completed their tours of duty and the unveiling of the Nigerian Army Heritage and Feature Centre insignia.
