The battle over dozens of high-value properties allegedly linked to former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, took another dramatic turn on Tuesday after a Federal High Court in Abuja reserved judgment on whether the assets should be permanently seized by the Federal Government.

The case, which has quietly grown into one of Nigeria’s most closely watched anti-corruption legal showdowns, centers around 57 properties spread across different parts of the country, including Abuja, Kano, Kebbi and Kaduna.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is pushing for the final forfeiture of the assets, arguing that investigations uncovered suspicious financial trails and ownership structures allegedly connected to unlawful enrichment.

But lawyers representing Malami and other affected parties fiercely challenged the move in court, insisting the properties were legally acquired and that the anti-graft agency failed to establish direct criminal links to the assets.

Inside the courtroom, both sides delivered intense final arguments before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, who later announced that judgment would be delivered at a later date.

The disputed assets reportedly include luxury apartments, hotels, schools, commercial plazas, filling stations and landed properties believed to be worth hundreds of billions of naira collectively.

The legal dispute has attracted nationwide attention because of the sheer scale of the properties involved and Malami’s influential role in Nigeria’s previous administration, where he served as the country’s chief law officer for eight years.

Analysts say the outcome of the case could become a defining moment in Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign, especially as public scrutiny over politically exposed persons continues to grow.

The court’s eventual ruling is expected to determine whether the assets permanently become government property or are returned to the defendants after months of legal confrontation, document filings and financial investigations.

For now, uncertainty hangs over the massive property portfolio as both the prosecution and defence await what could become one of the most consequential forfeiture judgments in recent years.
