Arsenal will go all out to ensure they win their first ever UEFA Champions League trophy today when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the final at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.
Arsenal are in the Champions League final for the second time in history, with the Gunners falling short when they met Barcelona in 2006, losing 2-1 despite scoring first.
The Gunners ooze sheer confidence, having recently won their first Premier League title in 22-years but they face a stern test against PSG who also won the French Ligue 1 title and are the UCL reigning champions, having thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 in last season’s final.
Ahead of the game, though, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, having led the North London club to only their second Champions League final, has said that they have an opportunity to “write a new history”.
Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Arteta reacted to suggestions that PSG are favorites to emerge as champions, with the Spanish tactician saying that the Gunners are in Budapest to take the trophy from the Parisian side.
“Well, they are defending the trophy, they are the champions,” he said. “They earned the right last season. And we are here to take that away from them.”
He added: “I think it’s the opportunity to own the moment because it’s the second time in our history that we are here and we have the opportunity to write a new chapter in the history of this football club.
“In order to do that, we have to play tomorrow with such clarity, a lot of courage and a relentless desire to win. We have those three aspects and I’m sure that we’re going to be close to winning.
Saka: We have enough fire to face PSG
Arsenal winger, Bukayo Saka also spoke at the pre-match press conference, with the Englishman urging his teammates to seize their chance to make history by defeating PSG.
“We have enough fire going into the game tomorrow. We know we can write history as players for the first time and that gives us a lot of motivation.
“I am hungry and excited to have the opportunity to win another trophy, and create history for the club that I love.”
Odegaard: I’ve been dreaming about winning these trophies
Arsenal captain, Martin Odegaard added that he has been dreaming about winning these trophies, such as the Premier League and Champions League ever since he was a kid back in his native Norway.
“I have been dreaming about winning these trophies, since I grew up playing football as a kid with my friends, in the little pitch next to my house in Norway. It is something special that we can achieve that has not been done before,” Odegaard said, with enthusiasm.
The Gunners, however, know that they have a daunting task in PSG who have been Ligue 1 champions, for a fifth straight year, and equally have exceptional players in their ranks.
The likes of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Barcola are exceptional attacking players who can decide a game with their immense talent and PSG head coach, Luis Enrique will be counting on them to do the magic against Arsenal.
Enrique: No favorite in the final
Enrique has, however, been complimentary of Arsenal and Arteta, following their first Premier League title win in 22-years.
At Friday’s pre-match presser, the PSG gaffer said that newly-crowned EPL champions Arsenal deserve their title, adding that there is no favorite in the final.
“I am not surprised, especially with what he [Mikel Arteta] has done this year, the Spaniard said of his Gunners’ counterpart and compatriot.
“They are worthy of winning the Premier League, the best team in the league. It was not easy with Manchester City on their tails. Arteta has been there six and a half years, and he knows them inside and out.”
Asked if PSG could be seen as favorites for the game, Enrique added: “I don’t think that there is a favorite, to be honest. For us, the devil is in the details, and I think it will be a very close call.
“We have to give our all but enjoy the 90 minutes; there is always tension. It is about knowing how to manage that stress, that is important.”
