The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Hospital donated by Abdul Samad Rabiu Initiative (ASR Africa) said that it has conducted over 300 minor and major surgeries on residents of Bauchi State between February 17 and early June, 2026.

The Chief Medical Director and Zonal Medical Officer of NCS, Zone D, Bauchi, Sanusi Rimi Garba disclosed this when he received a team of health journalists, (Journalists for Public Health and Development Initiative) J4PD at his office in Bauchi.

Rimi said that the facility, which was donated by ASR Africa Initiative, was launched last February to cater for the general public. According to him, the Controller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi instructed that all services and consumables be subsidised by 50 percent.

Our Correspondent observed that patients were being charged N500 as consultation fee while medications were given at a discounted rate of 50 percent. Also, the facility was equipped with modern technology and machines that perform diagnosis within limited time, surgical theatres well equipped with sophisticated equipment.

Rimi added that many residents of the state have the impression that the facility was built exclusively for personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service until a series of community outreach were carried out to inform the residents of Bauchi.

“I can tell you that within the time we took off in mid February and now, we have performed not less than 300 major and minor surgeries in this hospital. All of these were done successfully by our own medical team.

“We offer antenatal care and delivery, we have our well equipped and standard facilities to do all those things.”

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of J4PD, Elizabeth Kah, lauded the Customs for the establishment of the Hospital, pointing at its proximity to some undeserved communities of Yelwa and Gwalameji and Rafin Zurfi and beyond in terms of secondary and tertiary health care services.

Kah added that issues of public health require adequate attention to promote a healthy society, considering the fact that public health comprises every aspect of life.

She stated that her organisation was ready to collaborate with the facility in the area of awareness creation and advocacy and provision of effective health services to Bauchi citizens.

Also, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Umar Sa’idu, commended NCS for establishing the hospital which he said would complement governments’ effort of providing accessible healthcare services to the people.
