Emmanuella Otiono exhibition, titled, Strength That Shines Through Darkness,is currently showing in Illinois, USA. The show, which opened to the public on June 7, 2026, will end June 22.

Otiono, a self-taught artist, educator, school proprietor and mother, is known for an artistic practice grounded in empathy, resilience, and social awareness.

The collection draws inspiration from the lived experiences of displaced communities in Borno State, capturing stories of struggle, courage, hope, and the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Through her works, Otiono invites viewers to reflect on the resilience of vulnerable communities and the enduring strength that enables people to rise above hardship and uncertainty.

Otiono’s work is grounded in empathy, resilience, and social awareness. She invites viewers into a space of reflection–where pain and dignity coexist, and where even in darkness, something brightly human persists.

She uses the symbolic vibrancy of colour, particularly with the scarves that crown her figures, to honor the quiet yet unyielding power of women who navigate hardship while still asserting beauty, identity, and presence.

The exhibition is a testament to the power of creativity as a tool for social engagement, healing, and advocacy, while also highlighting the immense potential of Nigerian talent on the global stage.
