The Taxombud/Chief Executive of the Office of Tax Ombud, Dr John Nwabueze, promised that the coming of the office would address the unfair treatment of taxpayers by tax authorities.

Nwabueze, who stated this on Tuesday during a media briefing in Abuja, said over time, many taxpayers have been treated unfairly by tax authorities simply because they have no one to report to.

He said the establishment of the Office of the TaxOmbud under the new Nigerian tax administration framework was a significant milestone in strengthening transparency, accountability, fairness and taxpayers’ confidence in the tax system.

“The Office provides an independent mechanism for addressing taxpayers’ rights, and promoting trust between tax authorities and citizens. We are here to listen to the grievances of taxpayers.

“Globally, modern tax systems are anchored not only in efficient revenue mobilisation but also in fairness, accessibility, dispute resolution, and public trust. The Office of the TaxOmbud was created with accessible, timely and cost-effective mechanisms for addressing, resolving disputes, and promoting voluntary compliance,” he said.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for reforming Nigeria’s tax system, introducing fairness, inclusiveness and sustainability.

“Our mandate is clear: to serve as a trusted bridge between taxpayers and revenue authorities through mediation, conciliation, stakeholder engagement, and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms that reduce prolonged litigation and enhance institutional efficiency”, he said.
