The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Lekki and District Society, Adeyemi Adediran, has unveiled a four-pillar agenda centred on thought leadership, membership growth and mentorship, digital transformation, and the catch them young initiative to position the district as the leading District Society in Nigeria.
Adediran, who outlined the agenda during his investiture as the fifth Chairman of the ICAN Lekki & District Society, said that the district had moved beyond the question of whether it could grow and should instead focus on leading, innovating and creating lasting impact.
According to him, the vision is to make the district a leading professional body renowned for excellence, innovation and societal impact.
The newly inaugurated ICAN chairman, while speaking with The Guardian after the ceremony, called for stronger collaboration between the accounting profession and government, saying, “there should be a platform for engagement between the accounting profession and the government to shape the decisions that affect the economy and also the society at large.”
He also said that his administration would leverage technology to deepen members’ engagement and improve interaction within the district, while urging accountants to uphold integrity and professionalism.
The ICAN President, Queensley Seghosime, represented by the governing council member, Dr Oluwatobi Abiola, said district societies remain central to translating the Institute’s vision into measurable impact, noting that leadership would be assessed not by ceremonies but by value created for members, students and the society.
Abiola urged the incoming leadership to align its programmes with ICAN’s strategic priorities, including members’ development, students’ engagement, corporate social responsibility, stakeholders’ partnerships,
He also urged the incoming committee members to begin mobilising members, students, and stakeholders for active participation in the 56th annual accountants’ conference, scheduled to be held later in the year in Abuja.
The ICAN President, while speaking on Artificial Intelligence (AI), added that the Institute was equipping members with AI knowledge, stressing that accountants must embrace the technology to improve efficiency and enhance service delivery.
In his valedictory address, the outgoing Chairman of the ICAN Lekki & District Society, Patrick Akamiokhor, urged the incoming administration to build on the district’s achievements, highlighting gains recorded in membership growth, professional development, youth engagement and members’ welfare during his one-year tenure.
He said the district’s catch them young initiative exceeded its target by reaching 16 schools instead of the 12 initially planned, exposing more than 1,000 students to career opportunities in accounting and demonstrating the profession’s relevance across government, healthcare and business.
Akamiokhor also pointed to institutional engagements undertaken during his tenure, including visits to the Free Trade Zone, the Enterprise Development Centre, and Pan-Atlantic University, aimed at strengthening collaboration among academia, enterprise, and the accounting profession.
He, therefore, urged the incoming administration to build on existing programmes and sustain continuity.
However, Group Chairman of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, Bimbo Ashiru, advised the new chairman to focus on one defining project during his tenure rather than pursuing multiple initiatives.
