A Network of Civil Society Organisation in Nigeria on Monday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) before the 2027 general elections to guarantee transparency in the process.
The group at a post conference briefing on the Senatorial by-election held on Saturday for Enugu North Senatorial seat, observed the delay in accreditation of voters and voting created by malfunctioned BVAS machines in the district.
The group, whose position was read to journalists by it’s Spokesman, Abubakar Musa, also urged the Commission to ensure deployment of electoral materials early enough to the polling units to avoid disenfranchisement of eligible voters.
Musa stated that their observations from Saturday’s by-election in Enugu, also reinforced the need for a strategic deployment of more security personnel in rural areas than urban centres.
“We also recommend to the Commission to improve on logistics as we observed late commencement of elections in some polling units during the election”, he stated.
Despite the glitches, the group said the election held in the 102 electoral wards with 184,094 accredited voters participating.
“Materials were evenly distributed both the sensitive and non-sensitive materials. Though the election experienced delays in some polling units due to late arrival of electoral materials and election personnel”, he added
The group said that seven political parties participated in the election, including APC, ADC, BP, LP, PDP, NDC and PRP, adding that election held in the six local government of the Senatorial zone.
They commended the Enugu State government for providing a peaceful and conducive environment during the election.
