The much-anticipated Ibile Divisional Boxing Championships, organised by the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame (LBHF), will commence on June 27 at the Agege Stadium.
The monthly tournament, organised by LBHF in collaboration with the Lagos Amateur Boxing Association (LABA), is aimed at taking amateur boxing across the five divisions of Lagos State — Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, and Epe. Winners from each division will qualify for the end-of-year Governor’s Belt Championship.
Ikeja will kick off the competition, with the Agege Stadium hosting the opening event, as boxers battle for places in the grand finale scheduled for later in the year.
According to LBHF Director, David Mohamed, the Ibile Divisional Championships is a new statewide amateur boxing competition designed to discover new talents and prepare boxers to represent Lagos at major national competitions, including the National Youth Games, National Sports Festival, and the newly introduced Intermediate Games, which Lagos will host in October.
Speaking on preparations for the championships, Mohamed revealed that a trial and qualification event was held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium Gymnasium on Wednesday.
“The idea is the brainchild of the founder of LBHF, Wale Edun, who is also the president of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF). We intend to find the best of the best in each division, who will then square off against one another in the prestigious Governor’s Belt Championship later in the year,” he said.
