Lagos State Government has warned contractors handling state housing projects that it will not hesitate to revoke the contracts if they fail to accelerate their pace of work.
]The state’s Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, gave the strict warning during an inspection tour of the LAGOSHOMS housing projects at Abraham Adesanya Extension (a Joint Venture project) and the crucial Sangotedo Housing Scheme Phase 2.
Akinderu-Fatai, while speaking with journalists during the technical assessment tour, which included directors and engineering teams from the ministry, expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of work at certain sites.
He said: “We are not really happy about the scope of work here and we also noticed some technical issues that we are going to resolve with the contractors.”
The minister, however, said that the state is targeting a massive development footprint aimed at delivering a total of roughly 2,000 housing units across multiple ongoing schemes by the end of December 2026.
This, according to him, includes the 526-unit Sangotedo project, which is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework.
The minister, who noted that the projects had faced significant setbacks, said that construction should have been concluded two years ago, citing macroeconomic headwinds as the reason for the delay.
Besides, he said that skyrocketing costs of building materials forced a temporary standstill where developers had to return to the negotiation table with the ministry to adjust to the shifting economic landscape.
He said that the grace period for excuses had officially closed, saying, “We have gone past that. The level we are now is delivery.”
