Sowore: Popular Nollywood actress withdraws from Anambra Senatorial race

AAC's Deputy National Chairperson, South-East, Chioma Ifemeludike

In the build up to the 2027 elections, a popular Nollywood actress, Chioma Ifemeludike has withdrawn from participation in the Anambra Central Senatorial District race on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC) in order to devote more time on the fight against injustice.

Ifemeludike who is the Deputy National Chairperson, South East Zone and the only female governorship candidate in the last November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra State attributed her withdrawal move as a push to demand for accountability on the part of leaders and representatives of the people.

Her withdrawal, political pundits, believe may not be unconnected with the ordeal of the AAC’s Presidential Candidate , Omoyele Sowore who is facing alleged criminal charges of calling President Bola Tinubu a criminal.

Sowore’s refusal to retract the “tag,” according to an impeccable source, was the reason the DSS pressed some charges against him at a Federal High court in Abuja, though the AAC’s Deputy National Chairman didn’t associate her withdrawal from Sowore’s ordeal.

Ifemeludike had, last week, called for the unconditional release of the Presidential Candidate of AAC for believed violation of his fundamental human rights of freedom of speech and holding public officers accountable.

The timing of withdrawal of Ifemeludike from the Senatorial race, we gathered, was greeted with mixed feelings of empathy and underhand intimidation.

However, the politician cum human rights activist had in a letter addressed to the Acting National Chairman of AAC dated 31st May 2026 distanced the justice- system ordeal of Sowore from her decision.

In the letter of notification of Withdrawal of Interest to Contest for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Ifemeludike told notified the National Working Committee (NWC) and the leadership of the AAC stated that her decision has been taken after careful reflection and in accordance with her personal convictions, principles, and commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of vulnerable members of society.

Her letter of withdrawal, a copy of which was made available to newsmen in Awka, yesterday stated: “Furthermore, recent events have reinforced my decision. In my view, the role played by Doris Ogala Umezurike in matters relating to the case of Baby Testimony and his physically challenged mother has been deeply concerning. I believe that the circumstances surrounding the matter contributed to prolonged distress, public embarrassment, and continued suffering for the child’s mother, while raising serious questions about the pursuit of justice for the child.

“These concerns have significantly influenced my decision to step away from my senatorial aspiration and focus on advocating for accountability, justice, and the protection of vulnerable members of society.

“Accordingly, I respectfully request that my name be withdrawn from all records, processes, and considerations relating to the Anambra Central Senatorial District Senatorial candidature.”

Ifemeludike expressed her sincere appreciation to the leadership and members of the party for the opportunity and support extended to her throughout the process, pledging her loyalty to membership of AAC and continued desire to work tirelessly for the success of the party and the advancement of its ideals.

She concluded,: “Please accept my assurances of continued commitment to the vision, principles, and objectives of our great party,” she added.
