Zulum, CMD pledge support for victims, parents of Borno abductions

A delegation of the Borno State Government on Wednesday visited Lassa in Askira/Uba Local Council of the state, as engagements continue with kidnap victims, the affected families and community leaders, to assess the situation and offer support.

Led by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Lawan Wakilbe, the visit was part of the state’s ongoing response to the attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa.

The team first visited the Federal Medical Centre, Mubi, where it met with a teacher at the school, Goni Shettima, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head during the attack.

Receiving the delegation, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Prof. Shuaibu Yahya, confirmed that the teacher’s condition was stable but that he would require advanced medical care.

However, Wakilbe conveyed Governor Babagana Zulum’s sympathy to the injured teacher and his family, assuring of the government’s continued support.

The delegation later proceeded to Uba, where it met with parents of the abducted students in the presence of the Emir of Uba, Aliyu Ibn Mamza. Addressing the gathering, Wakilbe assured the families that the government was working closely with security agencies for the safe release of the missing students.

Responding on behalf of the parents, Emmanuel Ayuba and Simon Wayindu appealed to the government to intensify efforts for the children’s speedy rescue, stating that families have faced untold emotional trauma and uncertainty since the attack.

The delegation also visited Mussa community, where students were abducted during a separate attack on a school on May 15, 2026.

It reassured affected parents of the government’s efforts to secure the children’s release.

The other members of the delegation included the Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs, Samaila Satumari; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Dr Julian Bitrus; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Projects, Emmanuel Yerima; and Treasurer of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Suleiman Maina, among others.
