Unique High School has emerged winner of the 2026 Press Day Inter-School Debate organised by Dansol High School after scoring 321 points in a competition at the school’s premises in Lagos.

Yeshua High School came second with 280 points, narrowly ahead of Supreme Foundation College, which secured 279 points, while Elias International School placed fourth with 252 points.

The debate, themed “Politics Without Victimisation,” challenged participating students to examine the role of politics in promoting fairness, inclusion and responsible leadership without intimidation or oppression.

Speaking after the event, Executive Director of Dansol High School, Mrs. Omotara Olanitori, said the school’s annual press day was designed to expose students to the principles and responsibilities of journalism while equipping them with critical thinking skills needed in an era dominated by social media.

According to her, the school’s press club, which publishes an annual magazine, was established to help students understand journalism, the role of the media and the ethics of reporting.

She recalled that prominent personalities, including former Lagos State First Lady, Dame Abimbola Fashola, had participated in previous editions of the debate, adding that the initiative was aimed at giving students a solid foundation in media literacy.

“We are conscious of the reality that the world of press and reporting is changing. What we are after is for the students to have the basic knowledge and understanding of the profession,” she said.

Olanitori added that the club also equips students with the ability to distinguish factual information from misinformation and fake news circulating on social media platforms.

She expressed satisfaction with the quality of presentations by the four participating schools, noting that the contestants demonstrated a sound understanding of the topic and were well prepared.

The guest speaker, Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr. Bankole Ajigbotafe, reminded the students that politics exists in every sphere of life, including schools, urging them to practice it without victimisation. He encouraged them to stand for truth, remain courageous and pursue their academic and future aspirations with determination.
