Experts in the technology sector have stressed the need to expand digital literacy and equip more Nigerians, particularly women and girls, with technology skills to drive innovation, create jobs and promote economic inclusion across the country.

The call was made during an international virtual technology engagement organised by the Moremi Techstars Foundation with the theme; “Building Financial Independence Through Tech.”
The webinar brought together software engineers and technology professionals who shared insights on emerging digital opportunities and the growing impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the future of work.

Founder of the foundation, Adetogun Samuel Adegunju, said digital skills have become critical tools for achieving financial independence and unlocking global opportunities for young Africans.
Opening the session, Adegunju told participants: “Tech skills today. Financial freedom tomorrow.”

According to him, the initiative was established to prepare girls and women for the changing world of work by providing them with relevant digital skills.

Adegunju appreciated the international speakers for volunteering their expertise and reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to empowering African women through technology.

He explained that the organisation draws inspiration from Moremi Ajasoro, whose courage and leadership remain symbolic of liberation, adding that the foundation seeks to free women from economic limitations by equipping them with digital skills, innovation and access to global opportunities.

Senior Software Engineer, Omar Salem, urged aspiring technology professionals to take advantage of online platforms to build sustainable careers, noting that consistency and continuous learning remain essential for success.
Speaking on “How to Start Earning Online as a Tech Professional: Getting Started and Staying Motivated,” Salem explained the various digital platforms available to tech professionals and demonstrated practical ways participants could begin generating income through technology.

He also encouraged participants to remain focused despite challenges, adding that global opportunities are increasingly available to individuals with relevant digital competencies.

Also speaking, Senior Backend Developer and Cloud ERP Specialist, Chris Hosh, said the rapid growth of artificial intelligence is transforming industries and creating new career opportunities for professionals willing to acquire relevant skills.

Presenting a paper titled “How AI Is Changing Jobs and How Women Can Quickly Venture Into It,” Hosh introduced participants to practical AI tools and explained how emerging technologies are reshaping workplaces across the world.
He noted that women should position themselves early by developing AI-related competencies to remain competitive in the evolving digital economy.

Participants said the programme inspired greater confidence to pursue careers in technology, while others already working in the sector gained insights into expanding their earning opportunities through digital platforms.
