SDSN Nigeria changemakers lead SDG clean-up campaign in Alimosho

SDSN Nigeria changemakers

A team of passionate young changemakers under the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Nigeria, as members of the SDG Advocates Programme Cohort 8, successfully carried out a community clean-up and environmental health campaign in Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos State, demonstrating the power of youth-led action in driving sustainable development.

The initiative, led by Oladipupo Afuwape, Team Lead of the Alimosho Advocates, brought together volunteers, community stakeholders, and residents in a collective effort to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment.

The Clean Up Alimosho Exercise was officially endorsed and supported by the Honourable Commissioner for the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, reflecting the importance of collaborative action in advancing environmental sustainability across Lagos State.
The Alimosho advocates also recognize the outstanding leadership and coordination of Advocate Abayomi Aderoju, Lagos State Lead, whose dedication and guidance played a significant role in ensuring the success of the Clean Up Lagos Exercise across participating communities.

Beyond the clean-up exercise, the advocates engaged residents in an environmental awareness campaign, educating community members on the importance of proper waste disposal, environmental sanitation, and the connection between a clean environment, climate action, and improved public health. The sensitization encouraged residents to adopt sustainable habits that contribute to healthier communities and a more resilient environment.

Recognizing the relationship between environmental conditions and disease prevention, the advocates also distributed free mosquito nets to residents while providing practical guidance on preventing mosquito breeding through proper environmental management. Community members were educated on simple actions they can take to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases and improve overall well-being.

The success of the initiative was made possible through the generous support of the project’s sponsors and partners, including KayBee_Essential, 1691 Tech Solutions, Impact for Health Foundation (IFF), and Climate Change Advocacy. Their contributions were instrumental in enabling the environmental sanitation exercise, community sensitization, and health outreach, reinforcing the impact of multi-sector collaboration in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
