The United Nations, UN,has been commended for its technical expertise and financial commitment towards eliminating poverty, saying, the federal government will continue to implement policies to reduce poverty in the country.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction in Nigeria, Bernard M. Doro, stated at the joint Steering Committee Meeting of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, saying, the government is committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in poverty reduction.

Doro said, “We will remain fully focus to ensuring that the renewed Hope Agenda is going on, and we’ll continue to implement policies that would reduce poverty, strengthen social protection and build resilience among vulnerable Nigerians.”

According to him, central to this effort is the flagship of National Coordination Framework, the One Humanitarian, One Poverty Response System (OHOPRS), which harmonises humanitarian action, social protection and poverty reduction within a single-window architecture.

“This will break down institutional silos and brings federal and state governments, development partners, UN agencies, civil society organisations and the private sector together to deliver coordinated, accountable support.”

The Minister explained, “These programmes and the 2030 shared a common purpose: eradicating poverty, expanding healthcare and education, strengthening food security and WASH, empowering women and youth and building resilient, inclusive communities.”

He therefore noted that his office’s responsibility within the committee “is to provide strategic direction, to monitor progress and to hold ourselves accountable. This sort of partnership can actually help countries, especially Nigeria, to move on as we have vast resources.”

Doro declared: The National Development Plan 2026-2030 will be finalised and will provide us with a guiding framework for how we develop our collective national priorities. There are now many options for financing development plans.

Similarly, the Minister maintained that a lot of innovative financing needs to be developed. And within that architecture, we have vendor finance, concessionary loans, private-sector funding, and other financing mechanisms we can leverage.

“More importantly, we believe that this is the time to move the needle on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. We’ve implemented the reforms necessary to move the economy forward and position us well on the path to development and progress.”

He believed, the UN system needs to move its weight in ensuring that Nigeria gets more guarantees, especially to reduce the cost of borrowing and capital, and also how the it supports us in developing the African credit rating system to help us drop the cost of borrowing and finance the Sustainable Development Goals.

Doro stated explicitly that the country has a lot of policies, and prepared even on how to achieve inclusive prosperity and inclusive growth. What remains now is to put the financing behind the talk.
