The Avala Brand creates history again, this time with Olajiji Fashion, during the Fusion Runway 2026, where the creatives showcase the beauty in the fusion between African heritage and contemporary fashion.

This phenomenal event took place in Gbagada Phase II, Lagos State, Nigeria, on 17 June 2026, featuring the synergy of the combination of African attire and Western wear.

The Creative Director of the Avala Brand, Chavala Wammanda, and the Creative Director of Olajiji Fashion, Olatunji Onafunye, collaborated to bring this masterpiece vision to life.

The intimate yet captivating event featured six high-fashion models — three ladies and three men, respectively — gracing the runway with their elegance, beauty, and the unique designs that reflect beauty beyond the borders of cultural differences.

The event, beyond routine, captured the bonding of the models during the event preparation. The models played games, ate snacks, checked out the runway, and completed their outfit testing/photoshoots prior to the commencement of the red carpet and runway event.

Early invitees who witnessed these pre-runway activities testified to the organisers’ attention to detail and the subtle values communicated by every aspect of the event. It was indeed remarkable.

The event commenced at around 3:30 p.m. with the red carpet, and the bubbly energy of the invitees graced the event centre.

The theme of this year’s runway is “Threads of Legacy.” It is needless to mention that the goal of this year’s Fusion Runway 2.0 is to preserve the legacy of our heroes’ past from being watered down by the constant need to be defined by Western culture, especially in the fashion industry.

It is important to state that the preservation of African heritage is now more than ever an uncompromising necessity in the face of the overwhelming contemporary invasion prevalent in African countries, especially Nigeria, whose roots extend into diverse cultural heritage.

The attempt to preserve African heritage in the fashion industry has always been reflected as a “stimulating journey to the past,” especially with tags such as “Old School fashion, Alte,” etc., rather than the adoption of our African wears into our everyday fashion.

The disadvantage in this is the construction of a perspective where African heritage is regarded as “archaic” rather than a relevant beauty standard that should be infused into everyday fashion trends.

More particularly, the unique African embroidery often regarded as “Aso Oke,” rather than dominating or finding a fusion with contemporary everyday fashion, is relegated and largely celebrated as best suited for particular events, especially Nigerian weddings.

While the idea of African heritage prevailing in African marriages is great, the Fusion Runway 2026, spearheaded by the collaboration between the Avala Brand and Olajiji Fashion, showcased the possibility of adopting African heritage into everyday fashion, especially corporate fashion.

The Fusion Runway 2026 showcased two runway collections, namely the Weekend Luxe and the Urban Essence. While the Weekend Luxe showcased a lineup of comfortable, luxurious outfits meant for special occasions and luxurious unwinding, the Urban Essence showcased an array of contemporary everyday outfits infused with African prints and identity.

The creativity in the outfit lineup was evident in the deliberate contrast between the two collections, each drawing from the same well of African heritage yet arriving at strikingly different expressions of it. This was not a case of designers simply repeating familiar patterns across looks; rather, every outfit change seemed to push the theme further, testing how far Aso Oke, prints, and traditional silhouettes could stretch without losing their identity.

That range was perhaps the strongest argument the Fusion Runway 2026 made all evening. It showed that African heritage fashion is not a fixed aesthetic confined to a single style of dress, but a language capable of speaking in as many tones as the twenty-four outfits worn across the runway.

It is noteworthy to mention that for an industry often pressured to choose between tradition and modernity, this event offered a rare glimpse of what happens when both are allowed to coexist on the same body, in the same collection, without compromise.

The runway collections were showcased in three different outfit changes by all the models, making a total of 24 outfits that reflect the excellence of African heritage. With each stride and twirl down the runway, these high-fashion models, each outfit stole the spotlight with its beauty and elegance.

Beyond the spotlighting of the unique outfits, it is important to highlight the synergy between the two fashion brands spearheading the 2026 Fusion Runway. It is no news that brands in similar industries employ multiple techniques to sabotage and compete against one another. However, these collaborating brands complemented each other’s strengths and weaknesses to ensure a hitch-free runway event.

This runway event is also a testament to the versatility of African fashion and its ability to thrive in the face of overwhelming domination by contemporary fashion.

The makeup of the models was done by @Thaliadee_makeovers. It was a subtle glam that did not seek to outshine the models’ natural beauty. The look stayed light and understated, letting the outfits do most of the talking. It made sense too, given how detailed the garments were; there was no need to compete for attention when the clothes already carried the story of the evening.

Overall, the runway event was amazing, well planned, and the outfits were the highlight of the evening.

Indeed, the AVALA BRAND and OLAJIJI FASHION 2026 release is definitely what the African fashion industry needed to resuscitate its continued relevance in the global fashion industry.

On a final note, The Fusion Runway 2025 [1.0] was good. The Fusion Runway 2026 [2.0] was even better, gracing us with the unexpected collaboration and theme the African Fashion Industry needed.

We therefore anticipate the release of the theme for the Fusion Runway 2027 [3.0] because it definitely will not be short of outstanding.

WATCH OUT for the AVALA BRAND, the next big hit in the global fashion industry.
