Residents of Energhen Community in Warri, Delta State, have called for strict adherence to due process in handling allegations involving a young resident, Jesse Pepple, while urging members of the public to avoid speculation and acts of vigilantism.

Community sources said Pepple was taken into police custody on June 13, 2020, following complaints reportedly made by some residents concerning allegations about his relationship with another male student.

According to the sources, law enforcement authorities investigated the matter and later released him after completing their inquiries.

Residents familiar with the incident said the allegations first emerged in 2017 while Pepple was a secondary school student, prompting discussions within the school community and dividing public opinion among students and residents.

They added that the reports contributed to tensions within the school environment, with disagreements and confrontations allegedly occurring after examinations.

Community leaders, however, condemned violence, harassment, intimidation and any form of self-help, stressing that complaints and allegations should be addressed only through lawful procedures.

In a statement made available to residents, community stakeholders urged the public to allow the relevant authorities to handle any complaints in accordance with the law.

The statement also called for respect for the rights and dignity of everyone involved while ensuring that concerns raised by residents are properly investigated through established legal processes.

“We encourage members of the public to allow the appropriate authorities to investigate any allegations and refrain from acts capable of undermining the rights and dignity of any individual,” the statement said.

The community reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful coexistence, public safety and respect for the rule of law, urging residents to remain calm and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions.
