The Federal Government, in collaboration with UNESCO and the African Union, has launched a mobile learning initiative aimed at improving teacher professional development and enhancing the quality of education across Africa.

The programme, themed “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative,” commenced in Abuja on Tuesday and will run for three days, from July 21 to 23, 2026.

The master training programme is being implemented by the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) in partnership with the Pan African University (PAU), with funding support from the Government of Japan. It is focused on strengthening the skills of teachers and school leaders through innovative digital learning tools.

The initiative targets five African countries — Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya and South Sudan — and seeks to expand access to continuous professional development, particularly for female teachers who often face challenges accessing traditional training opportunities due to location, time limitations and inadequate infrastructure.Through the use of mobile technology, educators will be able to access learning materials and professional development resources anytime and anywhere via a low-data, offline-friendly platform. The initiative is expected to support teachers in improving classroom delivery, adopting modern teaching methods and enhancing learning outcomes.

The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to using digital innovation to transform teacher training and build a more resilient, inclusive and future-ready education system. The ministry said investing in teachers remains central to improving the quality of education and preparing learners for the demands of a rapidly changing world.
